In the podlab, a military veteran confronts his struggles with expressing his experiences and emotions, discovering the power of storytelling through episode structuring. This transformative journey allows him to embrace his past, connect with fellow veterans, and ultimately find hope and healing in sharing his narrative.
When I first walked into the podlab, a rush of anxiety hit me. As a military veteran, I had spent years navigating my internal battles, often feeling isolated with my thoughts and experiences. Learning to communicate those feelings, to put them into words that not only made sense but also resonated with others, was something I never imagined I would struggle with. But here I was, ready to challenge myself in a whole new way. The first few sessions were tough. I found myself listening to my fellow veterans share their stories, and I admired their ability to articulate their experiences. They spoke about the raw emotions of combat, the weight of loss, and the struggle of transitioning back to civilian life. As I sat there, I felt both inspired and overwhelmed. Here I was, a veteran who had always been taught to be strong and resilient, yet I struggled to outline my own experiences. One day, after feeling particularly stuck, the facilitator introduced us to the concept of episode structuring. They explained it like breaking down a larger story into relatable segments – manageable episodes. At first, it felt strange to think of my life in this way. How could I take the chaos of my military experience and distill it into concise episodes? But as I started to experiment with different techniques, I began to see my past in a whole new light. One episode that stands out is the day we got ambushed. The adrenaline rushed through my veins, and time seemed to both slow down and speed up at once. It was terrifying, and the aftermath was haunting. But as I structured that episode, I started recalling more than just the fear. I remembered the camaraderie with my brothers and sisters, how we supported each other, how even in the darkest moments, we found laughter amidst the chaos. This realization was profound. I wasn't just a soldier; I was part of a powerful, resilient community. With each session in the podlab, I started to embrace my story more fully. The act of structuring my episodes became a form of healing. I saw how my military service, with all its complexity and challenges, shaped who I am today. It taught me lessons about resilience, about loyalty, and about being vulnerable. I could finally share my narrative not just as a fighter but as a survivor, a storyteller. Now, looking back, I realize that attending the podlab was more than just a workshop for me; it was a transformative journey. I found a voice I didn’t know I had, and I learned that sharing my experiences could foster understanding and connection with others. I left this experience feeling hopeful—not just about my own healing process, but about the journeys we all take as veterans. We’re not alone. We can share our stories, and in doing so, we can continue to heal together, episode by episode.

After two tours in Afghanistan, I lost my voice — not literally, but figuratively. The mic gave it back. Through StoryLab, I learned that my story isn't just mine to carry. It's mine to share.
I served 12 years at sea. When I came home, the silence was deafening. Podcasting became my lifeline — a way to process, to connect, and to remind other veterans they're not alone.
The Corps taught me discipline. One Man One Mic taught me vulnerability. Together, they gave me the tools to tell my story — the whole story — for the first time.
I flew missions overseas but couldn't navigate my own transition home. The PodLab program showed me how to turn my experience into something that helps others heal.
My final deployment left me with questions I couldn't answer alone. Through storytelling, I found community, purpose, and a microphone that finally felt like it was listening.
We trained together, deployed together, and came home to silence. Now we podcast together — turning our shared experiences into stories that bridge the civilian divide.
